The article explores the initial positions and affirms the uniform (functional) basis of the communicative-pragmatic and cognitive directions in cognitive linguistics. The concepts of function and functioning are investigated and their significance for the study of any linguistic phenomenon is postulated. The conclusion is made about the basic status of the main provisions of functionalism for the development of linguistic science as a whole.
