The article deals with the role of the cities of the region in the expansion of trade relations of local peoples and the population of Southern Russia of the considered period. It is emphasized that the Russian government considered trade to be the means of strengthening its political and economic positions in the region, in every possible way tried to regulate the exchange trade in the North Caucasus.
