The article deals with the techniques by which a famous poet, memoirist and critic V. Khodasevich creates the image of Maxim Gorky in his memoirs. In the centre of the author’s reasoning there is a specific character of the creative “I”, a particular image of the author. It is shown that the plot-forming element in creating the image is the ratio of the documentary and fiction origins.
