The article deals with the features of the first French translation of the poem by N.V. Gogol “Dead Souls” and its impact on the perception of the significant work of Russian literature in the French cultural space. Some significant omissions of the translator E. Moreau that significantly reduced the lyrical aspect of the poem contributed to the formation of the distorted idea of the work.
