The article deals with the basic standpoints of the synchronous approach to the description of the abbreviations that are defined as the words with the motivationally related and semantically identical syntactic text equivalents. The author suggests the method of definition of the textual equivalence of abbreviations and phrases, describes the concepts of “equivalent text”, “decryption stimulus”, “nest equivalence”.
