The article rebuts the view that the works by F.N. Gorenstein are characterized by pessimistic attitude. The late novel “The Flying Airplane” (1994) is under consideration. It is concluded that F.N. Gorenstein often refers to the techniques and forms characteristic of the Jewish humor tradition, among which there is irony, self-criticism, the tendency to paradoxical judgments, “religious” and black humor.
