The article deals with the basic approaches to acquiring the value attitude to motherhood in Russia in the second half of XIX - early XX centuries. They are biological and social approaches. The priorities in family and motherhood in the conditions of the changing society are determined. The components including the value attitude to motherhood are described. The main value ideas about the preparation of a future mother in Russia are identified. The names of the researchers working on this issue are represented in the article.
