On the background of complex historical events in the last quarter of the XVIII century, the article deals with the role and place of the North Caucasus in international relations. It is shown that there was a band competition with traditional adversaries of the Russian Empire and Persia ports. In addition, due to its geographical locationthe region was the scene of the collision of Russian and western interests.
