The article deals with the origins and diversity of periphrasis in the modern Russian language. Three ways to be included in the context of periphrastic combinations are described. The author shows the role of the individual author’s metaphorization of fixed expressions regarding other scientific fields (free atoms). The features of syntagmatic structure in metaphoric periphrasis are found out. The analysis shows the individual style of an ethnographer using metaphoric periphrastic combinations.
