The article characterizes the system of artistic devices to represent the literary environment in the novel by M. Bulgakov, shows the urgency to study the theme of literary existence in the domestic prose of the XX century. The analysis of the novel reveals the similarity with the texts of the medieval bestiaries, folklore theatre traditions, as well as some mythologemes based on the methods of reducing in creating the images of writers’ characters.
