During their many centuries of history the Karachai and the Balkars created the great folklore with the heroic Nart saga in the centre, which is peculiar for many Caucasus people different in genesis, historical events, languageand traditional culture. The article is devoted to the history of gathering and publishing of the Karachai and Balkar version of the Nart sagas beginning from the XIX century and up to the modern period.
