There are considered the military operations in the centre of Stalingrad, 19-26 September, 1942. In that period the Soviet command fought for the initiative in the battle for the city. There are analyzed the basic events and decisions, favourable and negative factors in the course of military operations, reasons for success and failures. The article is prepared with the use of the domestic and foreign archival information.
