There is covered one of the scantily investigated issues of theory and experience of a fiction translation – achievement of its adequacy by the way of use of lexical transformations. On the basis of comparative analysis of two-language texts (Ossetian → Russian) there is considered the potential of transfer of meaning and images from the original language to the translating one.
