There are given the research results of the term and notion of metonomasia in the domestic and foreign scientific tradition. On the basis of the research results, there is suggested the optimal definition of the linguistic term metonomasia, conceptual and terminiligocal differentiations of metonomasia method and metonomative mistakes.
